Shortly after local volunteers completed their first tree-plantings in the park, many of the young saplings were vandalized, their skinny trunks snapped by rambunctious local youth. The volunteers were frustrated, but rather than try and punish the children, they chose to include them in the next tree-planting project.

These eight basswoods (Tilia Americana), four blue spruces (Picea pungens), and three sugar maples (Acer saccharum) were planted with the help of students from St. Anthony’s school. By taking part, the children gained a sense of responsibility and ownership for the trees. As a result, there have been no further problems with vandalism. In the following years, the students have returned to do maintenance on the trees, with several of the work days being led by arborists from LEAF.
