Asphalt, concrete, and brick make schoolyards very hot places to play. In summer months, it is common for a schoolyard such as this to be 5 degrees Celsius warmer than the surrounding neighbourhood. Trees provide shade and can help keep schoolyards and the children who play in them cool, which is the goal of this new bed of trees and flowers running along Hallam Street.

Recently, City staff tore up the cracked black asphalt to plant three serviceberries trees (Amelanchier Canadensis), two Kentucky coffee trees (Gymnocladus dioicus), and three Japanese flowering cherry trees (Prunus serrulata). Children from Dovercourt Junior Public School planted the flowers, painted the colourful murals, and now maintain the beds. It was a simple project that will have a long-term positive impact.
