Like many yards in the city, this property was once surrounded by a rusty chain link fence. In the summer of 2005, a group of volunteers from the Toronto Public Space Committee (TPSC) offered to remove the fence for the owner, free of charge. The intention being to bring down these metal barriers separating public and private spaces, both physically and mentally. The posts were cut off at the ground with an electric grinder, and the chain link clipped off and rolled up to be recycled.

The project was a success, with neighbours, who had looked at the unattractive fence for years, rolling up their sleeves to help with its removal. City-TV even showed up to film a segment for the evening news. The TPSC has done dozens of similar fence removals in the past two years, earning the organization one of Toronto’s Clean and Beautiful City Awards for its efforts.
