August 20th — 6:30pm 8:30pm
Join LEAF arborist Todd Irvine, art historian Lora Senechal Carney, and special guest Rosario Marchese as we explore the grounds of Queen’s Park, an isolated island of magnificent trees and revealing history within a flowing river of downtown traffic. Learn how early British imperialism influenced the styles and figures that adorn the statues of Queen’s Park south. Among the protective presence of Queen Victoria and her cannons, we will discover beautiful copper beeches, a grand old English oak and huge Kentucky coffee trees. We will then cross into Queen’s Park north to discover the tranquility offered by the massive canopies of ancient white and pin oaks. Renowned Canadian poet Al Purdy is memorialized in a more relaxed style of statuary in the north end of the park.
