This young silver maple (Acer saccharinum) has big shoes to fill. It is a recent offspring of the historic tree in front of Maple Cottage. Recognizing the big old tree will eventually die, local volunteers gathered some of the seedlings that grew up around its base. Gathering seeds and seedlings from mature trees and planting them in the surrounding area passes on the strong genetic characteristics of the parent tree that enabled it to reach its full maturity.

Maple Leaf Forever Park is a recent addition of green to the neigbhourhood as well. It was created when the town homes were built to the west. Although a quite getaway, this park is underused and might have been more successful if the newly built houses faced onto the park, rather than having their figurative backs turned.
